Abstract
Objective:To explore the reliability of conrast enhangced ultrasonography(CEUS) in assessing the response of heptic tumors after radiofrequency ablation(RFA) compared with histopathology.
Methods:VX2 tumors (1×1×1mm3)were implanted into 8 New Zealand rabbits, and 8 tumors were harvested RFA was applied to each tumor with for 140.1±25.5 seconds to ensure incomplete tumor ablation. CEUS was performed 4 days after RFA following with histopathologic examination. The largest diameters of all leasions after RFA in CEUS were compared with that of fresh specimens. CEUS-histopathologic correlation was analyzed in almost the same plane of CEUS imaging and pathologic specimens
Results:Residual tumors were found in 7 of 8 rabbits, benign periablational enhancement in 4 of 8 lesions, the same as histopathologic analysis. The difference between the largest diameters after RFA in CEUS and that of fresh specimens was without statistical significance. CEUS correlated well with histopathology considering the areas of percentage of the necrosis(r=0.986)
Conclusion:CEUS can accurately discriminate the coagulation necrosis from residual tumors after RFA in a few days, and detect benign periablational enhancement. It is an effective methods to adequately assess the adequate treatment of a given tumor. It will play an important role in clinic
