Abstract
Objective:To explore the extent and rate of occurrence n SARS patients complicated by pulmonary fibrosis.
Materials and methods:A I-year imaging follow-up observation on 44 cases with diagnosis of SARS confirmed staying and receiving treatment in our hospital, contents of follow-up observation consisted of frontal and lateral chest x-ray plates, frontal X-ray plates of pelvis and CT scanning.
Results:Among the 44 SARS patients,24 revealed fibrotic changes of various extent in the lungs while staying in the hospital. In 19 cases with severe SARS,15 cases showed fibrotic changes of various extents in the lungs during the period of staying in the hospital. Of the ordinary 25 SARS cases,9 were complicated by pulmonary fibrosis. Comparing between these two groups,it showed a difference of statistical significance (p<0.05). At time of discharge from the hospital,12 cases (27%) had existence of fibrosis in their lungs. After a follow-up in 1 month,5 SARS cases (11%) showed presence of shadows of fibrotic cords in both lungs of different calibers; After a follow-up for 3 months, only 3 cases (6%) were discovered to show scanty amount of shadows of fibrotic streaks in their lung,After 6months and 1-year follow-up,2 cases (4%)were discovered to show shadows of fibrotic streaks in their lung.
Conclusion:Pulmonary fibrosis is a commonly-seen complication in SARS patients;it is more apt to occur in severe SARS cases than those in the group of common type of SARS cases. Those severe SARS cases complicated by pulmonary fibrosis showed a higher severity marked by slower absorptive process and requiring longer time.
